For Richmond individuals and families caught in the grip of a housing crisis, the task of finding shelter is daunting. Until recently, those in search of a place to stay would walk from shelter to shelter, often turned away for lack of space or deemed ineligible for service.
In April 2004, CCC established a program designed to help homeless individuals and families obtain immediate shelter and related services. By operating Central Intake as Richmond’s point of entry for those in crisis, staff is equipped to provide a more efficient rapid response to those seeking help. The staff and volunteers at Central Intake work together with other human service providers including Caritas, ESI Connections, Salvation Army and the Daily Planet toward a solution to end Richmond’s homeless problem.
“Central Intake is perhaps the only way to assure each homeless individual or family dignity and respect, in that they will no longer have to go from shelter to shelter in pursuit of a place to stay for the night,” said Rev. David J. Bergner. “They can now be welcomed by shelter staff and have their needs more adequately addressed,” he added.
