Interpretation Services

CCC uses several modalities of interpretation. The most frequently used are consecutive and simultaneous. In consecutive interpretation, the interpreter waits for the speaker to finish several sentences or thoughts before translating. In Simultaneous interpretation, the translation happens while the speaker is talking.

These services are available virtually or by phone.

FAQs

Are there rules and laws about when to use an interpreter?

Both state and federal laws help ensure equal access to public services for individuals with low or no English proficiency. It is important to be familiar with these laws and to remain in compliance.

Why not just use AI or my phone app to translate?

AI and phone apps can be helpful, but they are not always good at nuance. It’s difficult to translate slang, idioms, or words with more than one meaning. Below are real examples CCC’s interpreters have encountered. - In English, calf could mean a baby cow or a part of your leg. An interpreter would understand the context and be able to provide the correct word for the situation. - When you say the alarm went off. Does that mean it’s broken? Was it turned off? It made a sound? - A pharmacy prescribed that a pill be taken once per day. In Spanish once means eleven.

Can I use interpretation for a Zoom meeting?

Yes, interpretation in a Zoom setting is becoming more and more common and is an excellent way to facilitate meetings with multiple participants

What technology do I need?

Just a computer or phone and internet access.
