Food Insecurity

One out of every nine people living in Virginia struggles with hunger and food insecurity, including one out of every seven children. One of the many ways that CCC has committed to nurturing children and families is by providing nutritious, emergency food.

CCC provides fresh produce, frozen meat, and other non-perishable food items. We rely on the generous donations of our community to help us meet the needs of our neighbors.

“Food insecurity is about more than just access to food. It is also about nutrition. Data shows that when families experience financial hardship, food costs are the first they slash. As a result, some families experiencing food insecurity turn towards food with decreased nutritional quality or reduce their overall intake.” - Virginia Department of Social Services

Who Hunger Touches

Hunger doesn’t discriminate—it impacts working families, seniors, veterans, and children alike. Many hardworking individuals and families are one emergency medical bill, broken water heater, leaky roof, or unexpected car repair away from a financial crisis. They are left making the decision to feed their family or pay essential bills. It’s a choice that all too many Americans face every day.

Senior Hunger

Many seniors live on a fixed income and struggle to afford fresh, nutritious food. Often, seniors are also isolated and face the additional challenge of limited transportation. CCC’s St. Francis House Food Pantry in Roanoke helps solve this challenge by making regular deliveries to senior where they live.

No child deserves to go to bed hungry. Yet, each year in Virginia, thousands of children don’t know where their next meal will come from.

Veteran Hunger

Food insecurity impacts one in nine working-age veterans in Virginia. Feeding America lists low pay, access to nearby grocery stores, unexpected expenses, and ineligibility for food assistance as some of the common reasons that military families often face food insecurity.

How You Can Help
