Supervised Visitation Program

Purpose
Supervised Visitation Program (SVP) facilitates the restoration of unsupervised contact between non-custodial parents or relatives and children when a court in the Roanoke area has ordered only supervised contact.

Method
SVP provides a safe, neutral, child-friendly place where children and parents interact at times convenient to working adults (weekdays, evenings and Saturday mornings). It utilizes the service of dedicated volunteers and the generous contributions of facilities at area churches. Most supervised visits occur weekly and last one hour. There is no charge for participation.

Emily and daughter Maisie enjoy weekly visits.

Registration
Parents or relatives with court orders for supervised visits contact staff to arrange an interview and complete program consent forms. Additional information is available through the SVP Coordinator at 540-278-1655 or via email.

Volunteers
Adult volunteers from the Roanoke area are needed as visit monitors to work in pairs observing and documenting visit interaction. Time commitment is flexible and assignments accommodate employment and family needs. Background checks and training are required. Contact the SVP Coordinator at 540-278-1650 or via email.

Sites
Host congregations open their classrooms, nurseries, lounges, libraries and even gyms for visits. They also encourage their members to volunteer as monitors. Current participating congregations include:

  • Cave Spring United Methodist Church, Roanoke
  • First United Methodist Church, Salem
  • Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Salem
  • Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, Roanoke
  • Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church, Vinton
