Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy provides services to the Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing in the Richmond Metro Area. We bridge the language gap, strengthening families and communities.

 

There is now a waiting list for sign language classes! Courses range from level I (beginner) to level 4 (master) — each 10-week course is $50.

 

Our American Sign Language teachers are deaf, giving students a full-immersion experience.

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy program grew from a 1982 Lions Club initiative to provide dual-party relay between the deaf and the hearing. Now the program includes a variety of services including information and referral, advocacy, equipment demonstration, public education and interpreting. Staff help resolve life issues caused by communication difficulties caused by deafness or hearing loss, such as landlord/tenant disputes, clarifying situations with employment, and resolving problems with creditors.


CCC offers four levels of American Sign Language classes throughout the year. Classes are held at the Richmond office located at 1512 Willow Lawn Drive.  Seating is limited to 9 students per class. The level 2 and 3 classes may be combined if class enrollment is less than 5 each class. Level 1: The Basic Sign Language Class is a 10-week class for beginning sign language students to introduce basic vocabulary, language tips, nonverbal gestures and important aspects of deaf culture. Registration fee: $50 + Book Price (TBA). Classes will be held Thursday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Dates TBA.

Level 2: For students who have completed the beginning course.  Registration fee is $50 (level 2 students pay only the registration fee). Classes will be held Tuesday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Dates TBA.

Level 3: For students who have completed levels 1 and 2.  Registration fee is $50 (level 3 students pay only the registration fee). Classes will be held Monday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Dates TBA.

Level 4:  For students who have completed level 1, 2 and 3 courses. Registration fee is $50 (level 4 students pay only the registration fee). Classes will be held Monday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Dates TBA.

SERVICES:
Informational presentations to civic organizations, educational sessions to businesses with deaf or hard of hearing employees, school education for deaf children and their parents, sign language classes, client assistance for the Central Virginia Lions Hearing Aid Bank.
