In 2010, CCC hosted the region’s first candlelight vigil in honor of children who were victims of abuse and neglect in Virginia.

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) of Lee, Scott, and Wise Counties speaks on behalf of children who have been victims of abuse or neglect. They work as part of the juvenile justice system to make known the child’s request and wishes to the judge. Volunteers develop a relationship with the child through home visits and regular contact. CASA volunteers also make known the facts of the case to the juvenile court judge and the volunteer’s recommendations of the case.

Jay,* a teenage young man who had long ago learned to be left behind by the adults in his life, was not too interested in opening up to his CASA worker. “I would be there for school and home visits but he would not talk to me about anything,” his CASA worker explains. Jay needed the constant, long-term relationship his CASA worker brought to his life. It took over a year, but her regular presence and care helped Jay turn a corner. He is now in a foster home and has a positive relationship with his foster parents.
